ABOUT

Almost everyone who meets me comments on my extreme level of passion, which is funny because it isn't something I spend a lot of time thinking about.

My connection to the natural world is my passion and driving life force, and I am inspired by being with people who are willing to pursue that connection with me. For me, that means valuing and learning about all living things, putting discovery before comfort, and being outdoors as a means to connect, not necessarily to get somewhere or accomplish a goal. I do not value ownership of stuff, especially screen technology related stuff, very highly. Spontaneous and rambling adventures make me the happiest, especially if there is water involved. Swimming in it, paddling across it, or even just looking at it. I value friendship even above family, and I will drop everything for my close friends. I tend to give and expect a lot in terms of loyalty.

Community is another core value of mine, and I am fortunate to belong to a strong community of connected people here on beautiful Cape Ann. I like to take in travelers, hitchhike, host community dinners, volunteer, and play with children. Trust, openness, and willingness to take some risks are important to me. (Though I don't mean life threatening risks).

I can be super daydreamer-ey, and kind of spacey at times, but am very thoughtful. I am not into alcohol, drugs, or caffeine; I just don't enjoy the effects at all. I won't judge you if you enjoy those things, in moderation. I try hard not to judge people. Not always successfully, but I try.

I am fascinated by rainforests and the people who live in them, as well as oceans and coastal trades; all the interconnections between people and the natural world, ideally involving mystery and hidden worlds (like in rainforests and oceans). I let my garden run wild and forget what I planted until it comes up. I still like snow days and other surprises.

I am told I am absurdly persistent, spontaneous, playful, and warm, and can be fairly childlike, though responsible as well. I am emotional and easily impacted by what is around me, and generally care about just about everything and everyone. I spent many years as somewhat of a wanderer, changing jobs and places and spending whatever I could earn on having wild adventures. Now I am much more settled, because I have found a place, a community, and work that I feel deeply attached to. I am in love with the small wilds of Cape Ann; the beaches, the intriguing and authentic people, and the many trails.

What I don't care about is control and predictability. I don't like tours or telling people what to do. I also hate being told what to do. Hence why I had to quit public school teaching fairly quickly.

I love spontaneous adventure and have no issue with sleeping in the car, on a train, in a soggy tent, or wherever, to experience new places and wildlife. My past adventures include solo bike touring all over the East coast, camping in central and South American rainforests, and a kayak camping trip from my local beach up around Cape Ann to Ipswich. I love absolutely all wildlife, furry or not. The only thing almost as wonderful is wildlife is any and all dogs, the slobbery and pouncier, the better.

This being said, I am not a "hard core" adventurer in that I don't go as far as rock or ice climbing or anything involving small planes. I do go for backpacking and overnight kayak/bike touring, often solo....but would love a buddy.

I am shy about meeting new people, but very talkative once I know you.

I love, love, love interesting stories...both hearing and telling.

I stand up for what I believe in, to a fault. I enjoy company of close friends and partners but not necessarily large groups of people

What I am looking for

You like science, nature, wildlife, outdoor adventure, or telling stories. Definitely if you are a natural science professional or educator, but that certainly isn't a requirement.

You care about your community and the people in your life.

You are more interested in character than style and don't care that I don't have fancy clothes or makeup.

I tend to connect with people who are high energy, curious, passionate, positive, un-materialistic, open, and accepting. I have a high tolerance for eccentricities, and a low tolerance for lack of authenticity, thoughtlessness, and selfishness. If you are very into beer or golf or sports or video games, I am not judging you at all, but we probably won't connect.

I am more likely to respond if you can write me a substantive message connected to something we have in common, or something in my profile
